STATISTICS AS A PLATFORM IN EDUCATION FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

INTEGRATION OF EDUCATION FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT TO STATISTICS

This paper explores the integration of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in technology education and the extent to which it is currently addressed in curriculum documents and state examinations in technology education at post-primary level in Ireland. This analysis is conducted amidst the backdrop of considerable change in technology education at post-primary level. The analysis of the provision of technology education found, that among the range of technology related subjects offered, the study of Technology and Society is only addressed in one in a comprehensive manner. The paper discusses the implications of this limited integration, examines the factors inhibiting greater integration of ESD and outlines opportunities for future development.

MY REFLECTIONS IN STATISTICS ACCORDING TO MODULE (As discussed by our professor: Ava Clare Marie O. Robles, Ph.D.)

Module 1     Introduction to Educational Statistics
Our professor discussed thoroughly the functions, uses and importance of statistics.  After the discussion, I concluded that statistics played an important role in daily lives.  For example in Polomolok, there are some businessmen who used to sell the charcoal/uling in our supermarket.  The said charcaol /uling is coming from the burning  tress cut from the mountainous ranges area of Polomolok.  If this activity  has done five years ago.  Iam worried that someday, the thick population of the trees will vanish and soon the flood will inevitably wipe out the entire town.  In relation to this , Statistics will give an idea what will happen in the future based on the existing facts in the present.   The question is what our local government officials do in Polomolok to solve  this environmental problem  in  response to the threat of the  Global Warming.

Module 2     Variables: Subject Matter of Statistics and Research
The term variable was also discussed including its different classifications.  Variable is something to do with the relationship of an individual to others and the environment.  Our actions and and our words have an impact to others.  So, we must be cautios to our actions and words because it will hurt and destroy our relationships with others.  All of these things has relation to variable.  The words that we say is the independent variable while its effect is the dependent variable.
Module 3     Integration of innovation in Statistics
My professor discussed how to make a blog,e- portfolio and other innovations for the reason that she wanted that each and everyone of us will be competitive locally and globally.  In fact Iam quiet stranger to this kind of innovation in the sense that I have a little knowledge relative to this kind of innovation.  In line with this, I  use to double my time in learning the said innovation in making the said portfolio in the blob.  However, despite of difficulty in making the blog, I am very much thankful to our professor for introducing us this innovation despite of the sleepless nights of studying how to make a blog.
Module 4     Measure of Central Location
My Professor discussed also the meaning of mean, median and mode.  I have a knowledge about these because these were tackled during  when I was a college student .   What is amazing is that our professor introduced the use of MS excel to make them easier than before.   Here technology plays an active role in solving problems relative to central tendency.

Module 5     Measures of Variation
From this module, I learned how to be patient in my schooling.  This was started when our professor introduced topics so stranger to me.  I started to read different references to subdue my knowledge about the topics within this module.  I asked good ideas from my classmates in order to comprehend the  basic concept of topics found in the module.

Module 6     Measures of Correlation
My professor also discussed the measures of correlation.  Problems were presented then it was followed with the worksheet assignment.  This module was very much challenging to me because the problems found in our asssignment was quiet difficult.  I asked several person in our school to explain to me the concept in the module but sad to note  that they did not enough knowledge to suffice my query.  Thereafter I ,started to look for the  many references and lastly I began  to answer the questions  stipulated in the worksheets.  Thanks God ,this module teaches  a lesson of perseverance.  In our lives ,we will experiece hardships and misfortunes but we should not give up, be patient and  ask God’s help.  Surely He will help us and provide us all our needs.

Module 7     The Normal Probability Distribution
My professor discussed the normal distribution in interpreting the raw data.  Eventhough, she discussed the topic not so comprehensively but I got her main point.  For example in the classroom situation, getting the raw score of the pupil have a little significant meaning not unless additional data are applied in interpreting it.  Careful judgement and appraisal should be used in order to interpret with accuracy the given data.

Module 8     Sampling Theories and Hypothesis Testing
This module encompasses with the following important terms such as population, sample, parameter, different sampling designs and hypothesis.  All of these are equally important in the fielf of research.  A research result could be considered accurate if the reseacher took a desirable sample from the entire population before giving an inference.  On the otherhand , this could be in relation to our life.  For example in the municipality of Polomolok.  One should study how the people practice the proper segragation of  the waste materials.  One should took the sample randomly selected  in every barangay to represent the entire population.

Module 9     The T-Test, Z-Test, and Chi-Square Test

This module tells us the t-distribution, t-test of dependent and independent means, the chi-square test, z-test.  All of the mention tools/instrument are useful to achieve the accurate result of the problem.  Everyday , we are confronting different problems.  Do not attack the problem immediately.  One should study the nature of the problem carefully .  Use appropriate instrumment to combat the problem.

Module 10   Analysis of Variance
Our professor discussed about analysis of variance.  The reporters were trying their best to explain the basic concept.  In the classroom, there are many occasions when there is a need to compare the resluts from more than two groups.  For example, We might be interested as teachers in comparing the different methods of teaching to deytermine which is the most effective.  Three methods maybe the traditional lecture, discussion method, and the tutorial method.  The approprite procedure for testing the equality of several means is the analysis of variance.  We are going to use the method of variance to determine whether or not several population means are equal to one another.
Module 11   Linear and Multiple Regression Analysis
            Coming SOON!
Module 12   Computer Statistical Applications

E-Portfolio

Electronic Portfolios are a creative means of organizing, summarizing, and sharing artifacts, information, and ideas about teaching and/or learning, along with personal and professional growth. The reflective process of portfolio development can be as important as the final product. In many cases, they are used as part of faculty and student evaluation along with other assessment tools such as standardized tests. A portfolio is a sampling of the breadth and depth of a person's work conveying the range of abilities, attitudes, experiences, and achievements.

Traditionally, portfolios have been stored in boxes and three-ring binders. Although this format works fine for paper and other print-based materials, it misses many other ways ways of communicating ideas. Over the past decade, many people have found electronic portfolios as an effective way to more clearly present information not only through text, but also through visuals, audio, and video formats. Documents can be stored on hard drives, Zip disks, or CD-ROM in many digital formats such as text documents, picture files, web pages, digital video, and presentation files. They can be stored on hard drives, Zip disks, websites, or CD-ROM. Use the following websites to learn more about the development of electronic portfolios.

Statistics as a Platform in Education for Sustainable Development

Lapus said that "we education stakeholders have to ensure that sustainable development – which is the watchword of the century - should be well incorporated in the lessons and values we teach our children. They have to learn early on that nature is finite and there's a lot of catching up to do in terms of reviving the environment."
